As a little kid up in the late 60's, I can remember my mom getting
ready to go out. I used to love watching her apply her makeup. In the
70's, when I first started using makeup, I can remember asking her how
to do my eyes like Sharon Tate's. Mom would respond, "we all did that
look, it was common." Frankly, she's right. It was very common.
For the most part, Sharon's entire look was pretty timeless. Yes, she did wear things that were in style at the time (mini skirts, for example) but many of her clothes could still be worn today.
I've always loved her eye makeup. The look first became popular in the early 960's when Elizabeth Taylor portrayed "Cleopatra." The look really caught on and became all the rage.

Where'd this makeup style come from? I've always wondered if her makeup was done by some makeup artist who might've done Greta Garbo's eye makeup. Garbo's heyday was in the 1930's to early 1940's. It makes sense that one of her makeup artists still might've been in Hollywood or in Europe. Look at the photos and do a comparison.
Her makeup changed a bit through the years but it was still a classic look. I do a variation of it to this day.

Thanks, Venus! Very interesting. Love the chart. I seem to remember George Harrison's wife, Pattie Boyd, doing her makeup like this. I used to read about it in 16 magazine. Maybe no one taught Sharon; it was just the way women did their makeup in the 60s. I love the comparison of Garbo's makeup and Sharon's.

ReplyDeleteI think her makeup & hairstyle was much better in the late 60's than in the early 60's. I didn't like her eye makeup in Eye of the Devil.

I've seen that video, but couldn't find it, Carol. It was on some TV show, maybe her bio? i don't remember where I saw it.

I really think Cleopatra started it because I can look at pix of my mom before that and she might've only worn a bit of mascara and lipstick. After Cleo? A whole different look. Some of mom's cousins still call her Cleo!
I also think Sharon looked her best in the EOTD era.

Personally, I think Sharon was the most beautiful I've ever seen her in that video at Jay's party. She didn't have makeup on and looked so sweet and beautiful.
Katie, isn't that the video where she and Jay kiss and Sharon gives him such a loving gaze as he leaves? I think she was married to Roman at the time, Venus would know that.

Carol in that video, you can see her lost in thought and pulling on her lip. To me, it looks like she's rethinking her marriage. She's surrounded by laughter and love at that party. I think her marriage was a nightmare.
ReplyDeleteIf you'll notice, in the interviews with her & Roman, her performance looks coached and fake. Not natural and relaxed like she was with Jay.
Just my opinion.
I agree with you Katie re Sharon and Jay vs. Sharon and Roman. Thanks for the beautiful pictures. Sharon is wearing a lot of makeup but it looks very soft. Love her hair in EOTD, too. Very teased but still soft.

People see what they want to see. I am sorry but I do not see a ring on ST at all in the footage. I have gone back and forth over the 2:22 mark and I don't see it, sorry.
I am trying to remember where but I have seen this video described before as at a party while ST and JS were still together, which in context would explain their loving looks at each other.
The other version of this video shows a close-up of Sharon's left hand. I see a ring. I wish I knew who all those people were.
ReplyDeleteYep, she's definiterly wearing her wedding ring. In some versions, the footage is clearer than others. I've discussed this footage with many people and all have noticed her ring.
ReplyDeleteI've heard various reasons for this get-together. To me, it just looks like a casual gathering of friends. Looks like a fun time was had by all.
Katie, I also think it was in the fall. Most of them are wearing sandals but they have light jackets which might indicate that the day got cooler and this footage might've been taken when it was approaching dusk. Jay's property had lots of tres so I'm assuming it could be pretty breezy.

Anyway, you can definitely see some type of ring on Sharon's left ring finger at around 2:22. It's really faint, but you can see it.

ReplyDeleteThe other night, I watched the movie "Devil's Due". I didn't much like it, but there some scenes in it that sure looked like the hill behind where Spahn's Ranch was.
Starship, let's face it, people will say what they want. That guy described Jay as Sharon's fiancee, but most people who post videos only post what they think. He also said that Mark Lindsay was there. I'm with Katie, I didn't see him either. As far as I know, nobody knows exactly when this was taken except that it was definitely after she was married.

ReplyDeleteMy friend who told me it was him had a great theory. Here it is: If you see the entire sequence, Sharon and Jay are walking together by the pool and are sharing a conversation. All of a sudden this guy appears on the steps, Jay stops and Sharon moves forward as if to confront the guy. so she said she wonders if he went there at roman's request to keep an eye on things, LOL. It does look like Sharon's a bit po'd at first and he sort of placates her.

Venus, that's a good theory and it looked like that's what could have been going on. If you google "Gene Gutowski images" you'll see a picture of Sharon, Roman, and Gene and the man in the video definitely looks like it could have been Gene.

He was a close friend of Jack Nicholson and he helped Jack edit Easy Rider. He also starred in Nicholson's movie, Drive He Said. In the 60s he was a close friend of Natalie Wood and would often escort her to Hollywood events.

ReplyDeleteI used to date a very attractive lady on the California Central Coast, the one who's childhood nickname was "Labia Lenora". She said she copied here eye makeup from Sharon Tate. She used an eyebrow pencil to accentuate the crease where the top of the eye lid is just below the eyebrow. I didn't have the heart to tell her but it made her look older, like when some women age and their eyelid creases begin to look like they're sinking into their heads.....
