Thanks for the link, Venus. Speaking of books, PEOPLE mag gave Jeff Guinn's MANSON 4 stars: "He was always a desperate nobody who wanted to be somebody, an incompetent, petty thief who blamed everyone for his problems. But young Charlie Manson used his early years in and out of reform school to study: Dale Carnegie's HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE, the self-actualizing dictates of Scientology and, most important, the techniques of pimps to get troubled women to do their bidding. He became a genius at manipulating others, and with the Sharon Tate murders he eventually led a few followers to commit one of the most vicious crimes of our time. In this riveting, almost Dickensian narrative, Guinn demonstrates how the man who became Charles, and his 'family' of twisted followers, surfaced against a backdrop of radical change in society. Gurus were the rage, and new notions of sexual freedom and drug use were emerging, resulting in Manson's ability to manipulate his disciples into carrying out gruesome murders that shocked the nation."
I buy a lot from Amazon, including pre-order stuff. Never had a problem or ordered from a listing that turned out to be dicey. So I think Debra might have written a book. Just my opinion from my many years from ordering from Amazon.
The last two big releases of Manson genre books were duds written by authors who thought they could profit from previous books that riveted their readers. When you pay $25 for a book you can't even force yourself to finish it tends to make you think twice before spending hard earned cash on a burnt out genre.
If you buy a biography today you will most likely read what you already know because authors today write bios without interviewing anyone or leaving their laptop.
I hope Debra took the attitude thst the book buyer deserves something for their money instead of fluff and BS.
I'd be more interested in an unauthorized biography about Debra's daughter. She seems pretty interesting to me. I also wouldn't mind seeing a lot of pictures of her in it. ;)
How many fok do you think are going to go to the movies to see 'Lovelace'? What was compelling about Linda's life besides her sausage swallowing ability? I mean her story can be told in four minutes. And to go to a multiplex and buy a Lovelace ticket you might as well wear a hat that has PERV written on it. The movie might do well on cable or netflix but I just don't see it being a theatrical release success.
I feel the same about Guinn's book. Of course we are all going to read it. But the general public...I just don't know. Especially because there really is nothing of substance new in it. It will be interesting to see if the public bites. Does Amazon list book sales or have a best seller list? I am not familiar with them.
One time Patty "preordered" a book on the life and times of "Little" Edie Bouvier. She plunked down $75 and the book never got published. NOT a fan of preorders.
Leary, Amazon has a Best Seller list and if you pick a book, say HELTER SKELTER, it will tell you where it ranks on the Best Seller list. BTW, HS is #8,444 in All Books; #20 in Biography Serial Killers; #42 in Politics and Social Science; and #51 in Biography Murder and Mayhem.
Regarding this book, I have several online friends who've pre-ordered it so it must be legitimate. As for me, I'll wait until my local library gets it. If they don't get it, I'll have them do a library loan so I can read it. Then, if I think it's interesting enough, I'll buy it.
muchos gracias for the info Carol. I've never done Amazon as it would make me feel like I was betraying my book store (they're an endangered species). Anyways, can you see an actual total sales on that list? I am still very curious how Restless Souls and the one by Marlin M. or something sold as well.
How many fok do you think are going to go to the movies to see 'Lovelace'? --------------------------------- I'll wait for it to come to Netflix but I'll watch it. It had a HUGE cultural impact on American society when I was a kid. I remember a lot of hairy, pale, unattractive people in it. There was a drive-in porn theater in Davis, CA called The Westlane. When we were in high school in Vacaville we used to caravan up there and park outside the theater, drink beer, smoke pot, and heckle the movies. This is one we heckled.......
Venus, I think I'll wait for my library to get Debra's book, too. Leary, RESTLESS SOULS is #177,932 in All Books; no other specific breakdowns. As far as the other book, do you mean CHARLES MANSON NOW by Marlin Marynick? That is #175,719 in All Books; and also no other specific breakdowns.
One time Patty "preordered" a book on the life and times of "Little" Edie Bouvier ----------------------------------- Didn't she play Aunt Bea on Andy Griffith?......
Leary the local hardbound bookstore is an endangered species partially because of Amazon. The economy has been brutal to bookstores just like it has been to real estate or anything else for that matter. The hardbound book is on the way out as well.
Linda Lovelace is distantly connected to the Manson saga. Ive read that Sammy Davis Jr would sleep with Lovelace and her husband. Sammy Davis was a follower of Anton Lavey(sp) and Satanism for a while.
Lovelace was a nefarious character. She gained fame twice. Once for porno and the second time for claiming she was forced to make all those pornos.
Her claims on being held sex slave were total bunk. Tom Snyder debunked her.
The movie about Lovelace will be her third foray into fame although posthumously.
Her claims on being held sex slave were total bunk. Tom Snyder debunked her. ------------------------------ That reminds me of Susan Richardson from Eight Is Enough. She claimed to have been held captive in South Korea (if my memory serves me) and forced to make porn. It irritates me when people refuse to take responsibility for their actions and play the victim.....
Little Edie Bouvier of Grey Gardens fame. If'n you wanna have a convo about documentaries being fact or not a la' Hendrickson, this one is a must see.
Edie was Jackie Onassis Kennedy's cousin and she was stark raving mad. But she did her loony thing with such style and elegance: the raccoons are eating the walls, but hey, who cares? This jumpsuit makes a terrific head scarf!
Hey Doc, believe it or not I saw Deep Throat in the commons room at Harvard. Many amusing comments shouted out during the film. I agree it might be worth watching, I just don't think it will sail in the theatres. Though it might beat out The Lone Ranger.
whoops, forgot to thank Carol for that info. I still wish they would list the number of books sold. I lke numbers. But I am told you have to contact the publisher for that.

I wonder if it's possible to buy the soundtrack.... We laughed at the music almost as much as we did at the pale, hairy people.....

Matt the book sounds like Guinn repackaged old materiel. Is anything new in it other than the Dale Carnegie revelation?
BTW in order to pass the DC course you have to have several hours of public speaking. This must have come in very handy to Charlie for as anyone knows; gurus do a lot of public speaking.
Well i'm not quite up to the murders yet so i still have a ways to go but this book has a lot more detail about Mansons childhood and family than I've seen in one place before. It was an impulse buy for me,I went there looking for one thing,it wasn't there and I happened across Guinns book. So far I give it a thumbs up but wait til it comes to your local library...much cheaper that way!
He should have consulted a few more people for info.
He (Mr. Guinn) said he couldn't find Bill Garretson...all he had to do was email a few people like Brian Davis or Cats Cradle...easy..
He consulted with the teacher in Kansas who corresponded with Manson...he should have contacted Michael at BPT...who knows Manson personally.... again easy...
He (Mr. Guinn) said he asked permission to go onto former Spahn Ranch property from "The Church" -
They don't own that propery...the State of California does...they (the church)own some of it, but most of it is a State Park...
I wish he followed these blogs, he could have gotten many more contacts...
I'm going to his book signing next week... Beauders, I hope you will be there too.. I will be asking many questions!
with all due respect, L/S, let's not get to sanctimonious. This was a case of a specific person who caused three longtime bloggers - the Saint, Grump and myself - to leave the other site for good due to his overwhelming assholeness and him coming over here under disguise to continue his personal attacks. I simply asked you to take notice of him, as I would of any trouble maker. You run a blog, dealing with conflict is inescapable. Acting like it is beneath you comes across badly. Just my two cents.
I have no idea what (exactly) is involved with posting an item on Amazon.
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with the process.
Consequently, I have no idea how much weight this "pre-order" posting (for April 2014) actually carries.
In short, I have no idea if this book, will actually be released.
But... at any rate... a "pre-order" item (description) has been posted.

ReplyDeleteI just saw this too
ReplyDeleteFunny thing is it doesn't sound like a real publisher
I'm reading Guinn's book now.

Hi ColScott.
ReplyDeleteI agree.
The listing looks kinda flimsy.
Thing is:
Amazon sells everything from soup to nuts... including used items.
I don't think an Amazon listing, carries much more weight than an Ebay post.
But then again... I'm not an Amazon expert.
I'm skeptical.
I'll believe it, when I see it.

To tell you the most probable truth; Debra could probably serve the book buyer better if she wrote a book about horses.
