Bobby Beausoleil and "Love"
Charles Manson wasn't the only "family member" with Rock Star connections.
Tonight, I was watching a DVD called "Love Story".  Its a Documentary about the Band 'Love' which featured the late, great Arthur Lee.

Anyway, I decided to look through the Bonus Features, and I came across this clip of Johnny Echols (Guitarist) talking about Beausoleil's short time with the band.  Echols goes on to discuss meeting-up with Beausoleil a few years later, when Bobby was in the company of Sadie Mae Glutz.

Thanks Matt!

How creepy to come home and have Bobby and Susan holed up in your house. Brrrr.

Notice how he describes Susan as a skinny, dirty skank. He was even upset about the fact that she was even lying on his bed. That says a lot to me about the cleanliness of these girls.

Also, his fear that Charlie would find out that he was there and get mad at him clearly points out Charlie's control over these people.

Ah...Laurel Canyon's Lookout Mountain Ave, home to "Our House".

"this scroungy looking thing"..."black haired, real skinny, cadaverous, looked like she was walking dead, and I'm kinda bummed, this chick that looks like she hasn't bathed in years is in my bed."

LOL! That would be Sadie. I will never understand what Bobby or any other man found attractive about the filthy Sadie, maybe that she'd likely do anything. Anything.

This was great, thanks.

I loved this documentary...saw it a few years ago. I also liked that the other singer, Bryan MacLean, had been a roadie/equipment tech (can't remember which) for the early version of the Byrds. Can't remember the guy in the band, but the guy who lived in the tree house and was in what looked like a loin cloth and played all of those instruments....he was a trip.

Happy Thanksgiving!

It's odd that Beausoleil was travelling with Sadie and spent the night at Echols house in Hollywood.
Sadie became pregnant in early 68 and gave birth in October 68 so I doubt Rchols met Bobbie and Sadie in 68.
If Echols saw the two in his house preceding Sadie's pregnancy this puts Bobby playing guitar for "Love" in 1965 which is doubtful since Bobby would have been 15 or so.
It sounds more believable that Echols saw Sadie with Bobby in early 69.
Wasn't Bobby with Leslie and another girl in early 69?
By summer 69 Bobby was with Lutesinger.
I wonder why Bobby was travelling with Sadie unless Charlie sent Sadie along to make sure Bobby came back to Spahn.

Unknown said...

I had the same thought as MrPoirot. Bobby was definitely the real player in the group.

MrPoirot said...

Since Echol's Hollywood home was hardly 20 miles from Spahn Ranch it is also odd that Bobby stayed at Echol's home and didn't just drive back to the ranch.
Bobby no doubt knew that Sadie would definantly blab the bivouac to Charlie.
This incident Echols relates must have taken place at a tense moment.
I don't see things getting tense until after Charlie shot Lotsapoppa. So for some reason Bobby was with Sadie when Kitty Lutesinger was pregnant with his child.
Echols also has a very good understanding of the TLB murders because he clearly states that the murders "ended the dream".
Could the stay at Echol's have been in July 69?

As a (mostly) deafie, I rarely listen to anything recorded, usually due to poor quality. I'm very mindful of damaging what hearing I have left...so, having said that, I haven't listened to this, but with a few comments left here, it got me thinking....

How much of these memories these various people have are revisionist memories? You know, there was a guy I worked with....good looking guy, very good looking: think Colin Farrell. But the guy skeeved me out soooo bad from the moment he said *Hi*...I mean, bone-chilling skeeved out. All of my friends thought I was just crazy, especially since I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was about him. I was about 20 or so, so not very experienced in the ways of the world yet. Some, but not like now. lol

Anyhoo, I was watching the news a couple months later. There had been a particularly brutal home invasion/murder and they'd finally caught the killers. I looked up when I heard my co-worker's name. (Hearing was better then.) And, I was not surprised. I really wasn't.

So, on nerve-wracked Turkey Day, I'm wondering...all these people who describe people like Sadie/Susan as skanks and what ever...we've all known scumbags and skanks and aren't too surprised whey they end up bad, for lack of a better word. But, people like Babs...who described them as the nicest people and such...you see where I'm going? lol
Happy Bird Day!

It hard to know the specific Time frame that johnnys talking about here so I can't comment on that as far as when(or if) this took place.
And Lynn I think the guy You're thinking of is 'Snoopy' Pfisterer.
He had a great story in the Film about how He got out of the Draft.

there isn't a lot written about Beausoleil's whereabouts and travels in 69. I never got the impression that he was living at Spahn Ranch. Echol's story adds a new dimension to Bobby's relationship to Charlie. Bobby may have been under Charlie's spell and either didn't realize it or won't admit it.

Bobby travelling with Sadie is new news too.

Ive read that Love was Jim Morrisons fav band...

It's interesting to suppose this visit to Echols occurred in July of 1969.

Is it possible that Susan did blab to Charlie about Bobby's whereabouts and Charlie pulled the old "you owe me one" routine on Bobby to get him to go to Gary's house to get the supposed money he had but didn't have?

The same routine he pulled on Tex in August to go to Cielo Drive?

And why would he be hanging with Susan anyway? Another one of Charlie's orders to keep track of him?

Hi William.

Matt, do you have any idea why this Manson Myth book freezes up or any suggestions to help people read it?

Mission accomplished.

Does anyone in here have a guess as to where Bobby Beausoleil lived in 1969? Echol's says Bobby told him he lived at the Ranch.

Echols also said "we tripped". Does Echols mean they took LSD the night Bobby and Sadie crashed there?

beauders said...

i think beausoleil was just as committed to manson as the others he just doesn't people to know he was taken in by the little conman.

This is an interesting interview that I hadn't seen before thanx!

This is pure speculation on my part.

I would be interested in knowing the exact date when this took place. Listening to this guys interview, I found it eerily reminiscent of what took place at Gary Hinmans house involving Beausoliel, Atkins, and Mary Brunner.

Why would Atkins and Beausoliel just show up at this guys house if Beausoliel hadn't seen Echols for 2 years? I find that highly suspicious. Apparently, Echols didn't SEE Atkins "crashing" or "sleeping" in his bedroom, she may have been hiding.

While I have no proof, there is certainly a possibility that Atkins and Beausoleil were at this guys house for some ulterior motive.

Echols says that Beausoliel spoke in "hushed tones", apparently so Atkins couldn't hear. This almost certainly had to happen before the Hinman murder. Beausoliel must have had plenty of time and opportunity to disassociate from Manson had he chosen to do so.

katie8753 said...

Sunset, interesting speculation. It's strange that they were there out of the blue. And those two together....

fiona1933 said...

It's not weird they were together. Manson people just acted spontaneously. If Bobby was going off for a drive, Susan may have just jumped in with him.

Or maybe they were closer than has been said. He took her to Gary's after all. Perhaps they were up to no good, that day at Echolls home.

As to Sadie's appearance: this is the absolute classic appearance of a meth-head and it lends a lot of support to the story both Susan and Watson old about being up for days on meth before the killings. It is something that gets neglected. Meth is a terrible drug and causes terrible violence, often by wild stabbing.
Sadie is described as looking filthy: yet the girls were keen to show reporters how clean their habit s were. But people with severe drug habits often don't bathe as the water feels horrible. Cadaverous: well, they don't eat, either.
Now, since Charlie was a) against addictive drug use and b) supposed to be in control of them all, how was Susan getting away with this? it argues that Charlie knew only bits and pieces of what went on. Bugliosi had to present a picture at trial of a coherent family held together by controlling Charlie, but I think the reality is of a loose group of people, coming and going, some devoted to Manson, some not, the men especially disliking losing their identities, the women more willing (because more socialised to do so) to give them up.

Forming different loyalties, having little love affairs, taking their own drugs, running their own scams. Look at Tex, doing the Lotsapoppa rip-off! Did Charlie set that up? No! Watson was perfectly capable of finding a mark, doing a deal and running with the money, all by himself. And leaving his girl to take the heat.

Susan's appearance and Bobby and her being together and not telling Charlie, hint they had their own scam going and didnt want to share. Maybe a speed scam, who knows. But Susan was clearly on a crash and how come Charlie didn't know that?

I more and more wonder if Watson really was the driving force behind these killings and Charlie really never ordered them. I don't see much evidence of the family obeying him. Even Bugliosi could only come up with one or two examples.

Can anyone write to Bummer Bob and ask him about this?

Maybe if someone here is on Facebook they could check and see if Johnny Echols has a Facebook page.
Ask Him to elaborate.
I'd do it myself but I'm not on FB.
Heres an Article Johnny wrote on a Website about Beausoleil

Bobby B also knew Frank Zappa & the Mothers, he is credited as vocals in their album from 1966 Freak Out!

According to Schreck, Manson knew very well The Doors from their Whisky a go go days, he was a regular.

>>>Fiona said: I more and more wonder if Watson really was the driving force behind these killings and Charlie really never ordered them. I don't see much evidence of the family obeying him. Even Bugliosi could only come up with one or two examples.>>>

Fiona, the most telling tale of Charlie's dominance of these people is when he shaved his head and carved an "X" on his forehead, not only did his 3 defendants do the same, but all the family on the sidewalk vigil did the same as well as others.

Tex never shaved his head or carved an "X". He was not in charge of these people.

There was never a more important time for Charlie to disassociate with these people than during the trial. But he's Charlie. He wanted to control them til the end.

And he did.

He finally lost control years later when they realized that he wasn't magic and he wasn't going to get them off the hook.

Sad.....
