I think it's just as simple as too much drug use and brainwashing, and the fact that she felt loved by Charlie and had never felt that before, leading to blind devotion to a street-pimping con man.

Pat has spoken about her role of bringing any waverers back into line, and about participating in the knife drills Tex would conduct.
Added to that, her serious, thoughtful demeanour and tough guy posturing (such as when walking through the Halls of Justice on camera) probably made her a good choice for being a pick on the kill team.
So, Pat strikes me as the girl most likely to obey orders to the letter in August 69. Even if not previously violent, she perhaps came across as a good soldier & true believer who was primed & ready for the call to arms.
I agree with you, Cease, and along with what you've said, i've read that it took years for her to come to her senses. There are reports that she kept Charlie's photo on the wall of her cell for years, and sent letters to the others about keeping the faith.
What a waste of a life.
Yes, Marliese. And Pat & Lulu were pretty mad at Sadie for quite a time when they were neighbours in the cell block.

Oh yes Cease, for years and years. I don't think Lulu ever had much of a relationship with Susan...in prison. They were together in the isolation wing built just for them, where Lulu and Pat snubbed her for years...mostly Lulu, and then LVH moved on to other areas of the prison, and i doubt there was ever much of any contact whatsoever between them. I think Lulu and Pat have stayed friends, to the extent they can live alongside each other with what they've done.
Although now that i think about it, somewhere i saw or read something about LVH approaching Susan one day and briefly saying something about admiring something or other Susan was involved with...I can't remember what though...
Beausoleil said years ago, maybe the Truman Capote interview, can't remember, that Mary Brunner was scared half out of her wits at Gary's...literally frozen in fear, about to collapse down the wall... I don't know though...they're all such liars.

So... St., you mentioned the L-word. This reminds me to sort of argue against what you said about the girls being skanks at Spahn.
I'm more minded to think of them as soldiers of love. A real deep, devoted, worshipful love. And 'skankery' was just one of the ways they were conditioned to act.

Hi St. C, i need to try to find an online edition of that book...did see some excerpts from it on line.
I dislike her so much i refuse to spend even five cents on the book, though i am interested in what the author may have included about the others...like what you've mentioned about Pat. She spent a lot of time with all the girls, didn't she? And do you know, is the author of that book the person LVH stayed with during her brief release in the 70's?
During that time she was out, i'll bet she had no understanding whatsoever that she'd be spending the next 40 some years back in prison...trying every few years to get out and being denied.
Although I think she belongs in prison, i will never understand what kind of genius of a defense lawyer allows their client to testify that they thought ahead of time about whether or not they could kill and decided that yes, they could.
I think they were devoted skanks. Every one of them needed to be scrubbed down, disinfected, debugged, treated for God knows what kind of dripping green gook, malnourished, neglected teeth, hair, skin...all that sort of skankness.

According to Hendrickson, they involved their own children in drug taking and sex orgies. I can't think of much of anything more despicable than that. They make me sick.

Sadie had given some type of report on motherhood/ children- and that is what LULU approached her over. She said she never knew Sadie was such an interested mother- because she was told at the ranch that Saidie ignored her child... that was the first time they had spoken in a long time- you can read about this encounter on Saide's website if you are so inclined...

There's a photo taken I don't know when but in it Pat is folding her arms across her chest simultaneously throwing a signal with two or three fingers with one hand. I've seen photos of Sadie doing something like this too but in 1970 while incarcerated. My point is that if this photo was taken well into the 70s or even the 80s, then I can see this backing up the notion that she remained loyal to Charlie for many years after 1969.

So like i said, can you tell me then, is she the person Van Houten lived with during her brief time out of prison? I just wonder how they became acquainted, and why she didn't live with her father, or her mother, during that time. I think it would've been a better look for her...as far as reconciliation and stability etc. Regardless, I am just glad the jury in her third trial understood the facts of the crimes she willingly committed in 1969.
Her father later claimed that he was very supportive of her during that period, and that she was guilty only of manslaughter etc etc

He's lucky the hit squad didn't hit his house. She would have just as easily stabbed him in the back "after he was dead".
Add to that her involvement in the hawthorne shoot-out and her willingness to help the Wooly Hophead escape, even with the far-fetched airplane/hostage idea, it shows she had little if any concern for the safety of anyone but her own little group, this makes her dangerous to all.
It has been mentioned by the court shrink that Pat was the most far gone of the 3 women. She had pretty much lost all touch with reality by the time of the murders, a true borderline sichzo. At the risk of coming off a Pat appoligest, she should not have been held accountable for her actions the way a sane person would be.
I think Pat's brain was gone by August of 1969. I'm not sure when it finally returned, or if it ever returned fully.
I think that Pat is a bonafide victim of Charles Manson.
It took literally years for her to decompress from the association with him.
In that interview with Diane Sawyer in the 1990's, she still seemed confused, and not really sure of what happened. In her 1994 parole hearing, she looks dead, recanting what she could remember that happened those 2 nights.
I don't know if she will ever remember what really happened or why she did what she did.
I don't think it's a ploy. I think she really can't remember exactly what and why.
I DO think her only motivation for any actions was her extreme love for Charles Manson.

Adam, I really can't say. I think she was abused by Charles Manson. But is that an excuse? That's one of those questions that's just an opinion I guess.
I haven't walked in Pat's shoes, so I can't judge her. I just know that her actions on August 9th & 10th were so extreme. To follow anyone to that degree is psychotic.
I do think, as I've stated before, that Pat is the most remorseful. She isn't trying to hide behind this "born again" crap, and she really isn't trying that hard to get out. I think she's accepted her fate and knows she will die in prison.
Pat remembes all. Memories return after a while.
I have seen psychiatric diagnosises of various Family members but Ive never read detailed clinical analysis. I know that Sadie was Borderline Personality Disoder. Charlie was skidzo as well as Diane Lake. I'd give a quarter to read a shrinks analysis of what they saw in 1970 about all of the Family members arrested for murder. I'd love to read Lulu's shrink report that washed away in the flash flood that drowned her atty.
BTW, I think Lulu's 1st atty was looney too. Kanarek was a bizarre man. Fitsgerald was off the wall too.

Faith tells a few stories of taking her through LA traffic for the first time in awhile- and a small party they through for her- going to the beach stuff like that...

Also- Faith did take her to visit both parents and both families and there spouses/friends accepted her " warmly"
It's a far too pro Lulu book, all the blame is squarely placed on Manson. I imagine the author must be a man hating, lesbian feminist to paint such a one sided picture.

Gives a very detailed account of a similar true life occurrence that is similar to what LULU did- except it was not nearly as well known- and uses it as an example of the price most people would pay for similar crimes without the notoriety...

if you are looking for an argument for LULU to get out- they give you one...

it also eludes to several times where prison guards bend rules for her- going so far as to mention the first person LULU called when she was released temp to Karlene- was someone who worked at the prison...
implying she had personal relationships with some of them...
also a big to do about many people turning a blind eye- so they could sneak Ice Cream in her for her and the other two to make Banana Splits...
It was a shitty book lol but I found a few thing sin it interesting....

I personally wouldn't shut my eyes to go to sleep if horse teeth was in my house and the knife drawers were accessible.
I know she worked for an atty who represented her while awaiting trial. I'm curious who were the two OJ jurors were in her 2nd trial that gave a 10-2 verdict. All told it took three trials to convict her. The verdict was 34-2 in favor of guilty.

The jury in the Anthony trial was 6/6 at first, then the trailer trash jury decided they didn't want to linger for another week or so, being as they wanted to get back to their crack pipes and trailer-doin's, so they quickly devolved into a 12-0 not guilty verdict .
