Gaëtan Dugas - Infamous "Patient Zero" for AIDS
Died - March 30, 1984 (aged 31) - Quebec City, Quebec
What is the traditional "creation myth"?
ReplyDeleteWhat is the traditional "creation myth"?
ReplyDeleteNot sure but I've heard some persons claim that AIDS was created by:
(a) CIA
(b) WHO
(c) US Government other than CIA
(d) fill in the blank
Usually, these theories claim that the creator wanted to eradicate minorities through the disease.
Or I could be wrong.
Hi Mrstormsurge. I think I'll call you stormy.
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting. So people think AIDS was created to eliminate certain groups? Sounds like a SciFi novel. A scary one at that.
I thought AIDS originated in Africa many years before it got to the US & Canada.
There are people who will agree on Africa as an origin point but then go all conspiracy on you and say that the CIA began it in Africa to wipe out black people.
ReplyDeleteAgain, this is memory. I generally tune out the proponents of this stuff but that's what I remember before tuning out.
Marlin Marynick, Marlin Marynick. Marlin Marynick.
ReplyDeleteThat's an alliterative tongue twister. Say that 3 times fast. LOL.
I have no idea Katie.
ReplyDelete"Creation Myth"...
I've never heard that phrase before, either.
Maybe Stormsurge is correct.
Maybe there's a school of thought, which believes someone (on earth, or above) initiatied this illness intentionally?
Like I said... I have no idea.
Someone will come along with vast knowledge in this area, and explain it definitively.
It always happens when you start a new topic.
I remember years ago, in my area... it was popular amongst quite a group, to say "it started in Africa"?
It seems the blacks are simply the easiest to "dump on" every time.
Can't explain something?
Blame it on the Africans.
Pretty stupid.
===================================
On a different note:
I find it amazing that it's been 30 years, since the "first American diagnosis" of AIDS.
It just seems like it's been around forever now...
I haven't paused and thought about the "origin date" (for lack of a better word) for YEARS... but upon reflection, that sounds about accurate... 30 years.
Jeepers...
"Magic Johnson" has been looking great for decades with the disease it seems.
I guess (like everything else) if you have money, you can afford the best quality care?
Then again... he was a professional athlete, so maybe he had a strong immune system to start?
Who knows?
It seems he is one of the few, who has truly beaten the odds.
>>>Stormy said: There are people who will agree on Africa as an origin point but then go all conspiracy on you and say that the CIA began it in Africa to wipe out black people.>>>
ReplyDeleteI just don't believe that either Stormy. That's too far-fetched. I think AIDS originated out of a poverty stricken country with poor sanitary conditions, and eventually spread to other parts of the world.
I don't think that American scientists were too concerned about it until it was discovered in the blood banks.
Lynyrd, the first I heard of AIDS was in the latter part of 1979. At that time, the newspeople were downplaying it and saying it was only the gays who could get it. Little did we know that was NOT true.
ReplyDeleteWhen AIDS got into the blood banks, a lot of people contracted it by using blood products.
Whoops!
ReplyDeleteSpoke to soon...
It seems Katie is one of the "African Origin" believers.
LOLOL
I don't know..
There are MANY folks more educated in this area than me.
But... that whole "African origin" concept always struck me, as complete malarky.
I believe that notion is simply a convenient way for non-medical folks to explain something they don't understand.
People always feel better... more secure and immuned... when they can put an explanation to something... no matter how bizarre.
That's been going-on, since the beginning of time.
"The Gods" did it! LOLOL
"The God's did it, because we deserve it"! LOL
Is there even a shread of concrete evidence in that "African Origin" area... besides "word-of-muth" wive's tale?
Anyone?
Katie...
ReplyDeleteMuch like your nemesis Manson, you always pass-out nicknames.
Have you noticed that?
Miss Spiritual Tramp is Missy.
Mr. Stormsurge is Stormy...
Are you practicing the same "mind control techniques"??
AHahahaha
(Just bustin' Ya, LOL)
By the Way Stormsurge...
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your avatar on YouTube.
The smoking baby... classic!
It reminds me of the old Van Halen album cover, with the smoking baby.
(Was that banned?)
The best is when you talk with "Leatherface".
His avatar is looking up, and your is looking down!
Hilarious!
It's looks like you're actually looking at each other!
AHahahahaha
I always get a kick out of that...
>>>Are you practicing the same "mind control techniques"??>>
ReplyDeleteBUSTED!!! LOLOL!
As for the blog world...
ReplyDeleteI HAVE to give the #1 avatar award to "Cease2"!
Squeaky talking on two telephones simultaneously is priceless!
LOVE that photo!
I have to give #1 avatar to 2 gals: Mary and Marliese. Love that Marilyn Monroe!
ReplyDeleteYeah...
ReplyDeleteMary and Marliese, are my #2 and #3 picks.
...tied for second actually. LOL
(I don't want any trouble! LOL)
Well, we went from AIDS to avatars. What next?? HA HA.
ReplyDeleteThe traditional "creation myth" of aids that they are talking about has to do with the virus jumping species - from chimpanzees to humans. Chimps host a virus very similar to HIV - jumping species is how viruses like Ebola and AIDS are believed to survive and take on new forms.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like this book may be challenging that widely accepted explanation and backing the conspiracies that it was an experiment gone wrong or used to eradicate certain minorities.
Alan Cantwell is known to believe this was a man made disease and that the scientists that are trying to "blame" it on primates are actually being paid to help with the cover up.
So, I think the book is actually trying to convince conspirators that the conspiracy actually does exist and well reknown and respected AIDS scientists are getting paid to lie.
Wow - thanks...I tried really hard to dress nicely the day I took the picture :)
ReplyDeleteI've always kinda liked Bob's avatar as well.
ReplyDeleteHis avatar has a very "regal", "learned" message to it somehow.
"Regal" would be the best descriptor.
I've always thought that Winston Churchill would make a fabulous avatar.
I've always loved Winston's quotes.
He was a "regal" guy.
But Alas... I've been Archie for so long... I guess, that's-that!
Although... Archie kinda looks like Winston a little bit. LOLOL
Oh, and Alan Cantwell published a book about his theory of AIDS creation called "Queer Blood" - sorry, that was my source
ReplyDeleteThere is a segment about the Manson Girls movie airing on ET on CBS right now 7pm.......don't know if this is in all markets.
ReplyDeleteLooks to be pretty interesting. Turn on CBS if you can!
Wow Mary...
ReplyDeleteThat was quite the on-topic commentary!
Thanks!
Maybe, I should get a copy of this book after-all... "conspiracy", "cover-ups"... sounds good!
As Heaven is my witness...
ReplyDeleteI was JUST... and I mean JUST gonna say:
"Where the hell has Tom been lately"!
I was actually typing it!
...and he walks in the door.
Weird stuff...
Hi Tom.
ReplyDeleteAt 7pm here on CBS is Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. I don't think that's the same program you're talking about. LOL.
>>>Mary said: Wow - thanks...I tried really hard to dress nicely the day I took the picture :)>>
ReplyDeleteHA HA HA HA HA!!!
Tom, let us know what they say about The Manson Girls movie.
ReplyDeleteEntertainment Tonight.....7pm in the Philly Market.....I think they are saving it for last.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lynyrd - and as usual, my on topic discussion is actually off topic once I post my comment! Like I was telling Katie - I have the hardest time gathering my thoughts in time ... the subjects change so fast...but this time, I said eff it and posted it anyway
ReplyDeletesorry to put the damper on the comical topic that had started after I started my comment.
ReplyDeleteCall me wet blanket
Mary, no worries. You can say whatever you want. We'll get back to the main subject eventually. LOL.
ReplyDeleteET report was pretty much the standard mainstream media thing of Manson being the icon of evil who makes people kill at his command. Nothing you haven't heard before. The interview clip they showed of him was from 1990. He's playing with the interviewer, as is his way.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etonline.com/hmg/ That link may show the segment that was on ET this evening.
Sorry to get off the AIDS topic.
Thanks for the link Tom.
ReplyDeleteThat segment showed what I think are scenes from the movie.
If that is the case, she might as well re-name this movie from "The Manson Girls" to just "The Girls". It has nothing to do with fact.
From what I saw, it looks like a grade B porno flick.
Hi Bobby!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link. Good info!
I've heard stupid things like "God made AIDS to strike homosexuals and drug users" from right wing facists. It makes no sense at all.
ReplyDeleteI will go into this further in a bit. Watching Seinfeld now. LOL.
AIDS doesn't just strike homosexuals and drug users.
ReplyDeleteIf you will remember the Ray family in Florida back in the 80's, they had 3 young sons with Hemophilia who contracted AIDS through their blood product, because it was in the blood banks and no one was aware of it.
The 3 boys contracted AIDS from the very blood product that kept them alive.
When the town discovered they had AIDS, they were treated as lepers. They weren't allowed to attend school and finally someone burned their house down.
I hope we've come a long way since then.
Wow Bob!
ReplyDeleteThat's quite a website, and quite an article on AIDS!
I bookmarked that website in my "favorites".
I'll be using that website, more often.
Just a Re-cap:
ReplyDeleteThe article at Bob's Link, echoed (essentially) what Mary said.
Initially, some folks suggested that AIDS was created in a laboratory, either by mistake... OR intentionally (to target certain segmnts of society).
Others expanded on this idea, suggesting that scientists were experimenting with there "creation" in Haiti and/or Africa.
It's most commonly accepted now, that AIDS "jumped species", in such fashion as Ebola and Marburg came from monkeys.
Chimpanzees host a virus called SIV (Simian Immuno-deficiency Virus)... and HIV, is thought to be an off-shoot.
It should be interesting to see where Marlin takes the discussion from there.
It's raining cats and dogs here. I just had to step over a poodle.
ReplyDeleteThe best is when you talk with "Leatherface".
ReplyDeleteHis avatar is looking up, and your is looking down!
Hilarious!
It's looks like you're actually looking at each other!
AHahahahaha
I always look for him to post so I can post above him. Then I sit back, look at the avatars and LAUGH!!!!
But I could be wrong.
I always heard that it came from apes, as in someone actually fucked an infected monkey.
ReplyDeletealways a bad move....
ReplyDeleteAHahahaha
ReplyDeleteYeah... Tom.
I try to avoid that when possible.
Truth be told Adam...
I was kinda wondering how these diseases "jumped breeds" (as they termed it) myself... but, figured I wouldn't go there.
I mean, seriously... "Jumped Breeds"??
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck?!
Evidently, it gets MIGHTY lonely, in those African jungles...
ReplyDelete: )
Sorry folks...
ReplyDeleteTechnically, the article said "jumped species"... not "jumped breeds".
My bad.
Same difference anyway...
I think to suggest this disease "jumped breeds" is silly.
ReplyDeleteAnimals only mate with their own kind. They aren't like humans.
To suggest that a human "had sex" with a monkey and got a disease is really far fetched.
If you read about domestic animal diseases, such as feline lukemia, etc., these diseases are not communicable to humans.
AIDS started somewhere. But I really doubt if it was "started by the CIA".
Look at the bubonic plague. It was started by rats. Starvation forced people to eat them.
I believe that certain animals can become infected by certain viruses, for whatever reason.
I don't know if AIDS started in Africa, but I think that is where it was first discovered.
Stormy, I don't know what you're talking about, but I'll bet it's funny. I'm guessing you're talking about the BPT site.
ReplyDeleteI got on there today and Michael had a really good video.
Good job!!! LOL.
Bottom line, and this is the last I'll say tonight, because it's beddy bye time. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI don't think AIDS was a man-made disease. Jimmy Carter was President in the late 70's, and I know for a fact that he wouldn't have done something like that. He was a really nice guy. A Georgia peanut farmer. He wasn't that great of a President, but I'll tell you what...he was a really nice guy.
Of all the Presidents you want to diss, you can't diss Jimmy Carter.
Of course, now I'll hear all kinds of crap about him.
Well I'm watching The Nutty Professor. HA HA.
Oh well....night night. LOL.
Myths about the Americans deliberately inflicting indigenous peoples have been slung about for decades and centuries. Indians claimed the calvary used blankets infected with smallpox to kill off the Indians in the West.
ReplyDeleteThe hiv virus spread from monkeys to humans by way of humans consuming monkey flesh for sustenance. The virus migrated from Africa to N America via a male airline steward whom is usually referred to as "O" rather than by his name.
It seems Poirot's information, is discussed several places online.
ReplyDelete============================
Patient "Zero".
Real Name: Gaëtan Dugas
(Feb. 20, 1953 – March 30, 1984)
Canadian flight attendant, employed by "Air Canada".
Evidently, this guy is claimed to have infected as many folks as he could, with what he called "gay cancer", in an almost sociopathic manner.
===================================
A study published in the American Journal of Medicine in 1984 traced many of New York City's early HIV infections to an unnamed infected homosexual male flight attendant. Epidemiologists hypothesized that Dugas had carried the virus out of Africa and introduced it into the Western gay community.
Dugas was featured prominently in Randy Shilts's book "And the Band Played On", which documented the outbreak of AIDS in the United States. Shilts portrayed Gaëtan Dugas as having almost sociopathic behavior, by allegedly intentionally infecting, or at least recklessly endangering, others with the virus. Dugas was described as being a charming, handsome sexual athlete, who, according to his own estimation, averaged hundreds of sex partners a year. He claimed to have had over 2,500 sexual partners across North America since becoming sexually active in 1972.
Dugas died in Quebec City on March 30, 1984 as a result of kidney failure caused by continual AIDS-related infections.
The "Patient Zero" term arose in March 1984, after a CDC study. The CDC began tracking the sexual liaisons and practices of homosexual men in California and New York and some other states. As Dugas was found to be the center of a network of sexual partners, he was dubbed "patient 0".
Analysis and Criticism
ReplyDeleteGenetic analysis of HIV provides some support for the Patient Zero theory. Dugas is now believed to be part of a cluster of homosexual men who traveled frequently, were extremely sexually active, and died of AIDS at a very early stage in the epidemic.
However:
A November 2007 article in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" dismisses the Patient Zero hypothesis and claims that AIDS transited from Africa to Haiti in 1966 and from Haiti to the United States in 1969.
Robert Rayford has since been confirmed as the first documented victim of HIV/AIDS in North America, having died at age 16 in May 1969. He reported having experienced symptoms since 1966.
Here's quite an interesting timeline:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.rotten.com/library/
medicine/epidemics/aids/
I added a photo of Gaëtan Dugas... infamous "Patient Zero", under the "click here" section.
ReplyDeleteman comes from apes...so our DNA is very similar. Just as we evolved from apes, the virus can evolve from apes and infect humans.
ReplyDeletenot saying i believe in this theory - just discussing what I think they mean by jumping species
Hi Mary, good point.!
ReplyDeleteMr. P, thanks for posting that about patient Zero. I had forgotten all about that. Although it's hard to imagine one guy causing all this disease.
What's the difference between HIV and AIDS?
Katie, HIV is the virus that gives rise to the syndrome of AIDS. AIDS is a syndrome of symptoms such as a lowered T-cell count, compromised immune system, much greater chance of getting infections, etc. You can be HIV positive (i.e., have the virus) but not develop the syndrome of symptoms the virus causes.
ReplyDeleteOr I could be wrong.
Thanks Stormy. I have heard the term "full blown AIDS", which I'm assuming is the progression from just being HIV positive and developing into the more serious condition of AIDS that leaves you vulnerable to infections.
ReplyDeleteI guess it's like being exposed to Hepatitis, but yet not actually having it.
Stormsurge is correct.
ReplyDeleteOne can have HIV, but not suffer from full-blown AIDS symptoms.
That's a fact.
In fact, it's common to carry the HIV virus for years, before it develops into full-blown AIDS.
Probably another reason why it's spread so readily.
People can literally carry HIV for years, and not know it.
It's insidious really...
Something, I didn't know however
(assuming it's true):
From Wikipedia (I know Wikipedia, but still)...
"In 2007, the first case of someone being cured of HIV.
A San Francisco man, Timothy Ray Brown, coinfected with leukemia and HIV, is cured from HIV due to his bone marrow transplant in Germany. Other similar cases begin being studied to confirm what is believed to be similar results".
Not that I'd want to transplant my entire bone marrow to eradicate HIV... but still... it's promising news that HIV may be stopped completely someday... before it becomes AIDS.
If anyone is interested, the mental hospital that is home to John Hinckley, Jr., is asking a federal court on Wednesday to allow the man who shot President Ronald Reagan in 1981 extended visits outside the facility -- and eventual release to live with or near his mother in Williamsburg, Va.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/11/30/court-hearing-plea-for-reagan-shooter-to-gain-eventual-release-from-mental/
Hi Mary!
ReplyDeleteI was totally just joking with Adam and Tom, about the "species jumping", or "monkey jumping", as it were. LOL
It seems there IS tons of scientific evidence online, suggesting that HIV, did originate from a very similar virus which kiils monekys/chimpanzees.
"Researchers believe that sometime in the 1930s a form of simian immunodeficiency virus jumped to humans in central Africa. The mutated virus becomes HIV-1".
================================
There's also evidence that the first reported case WAS found in Africa in 1959... in the Congo specifically.
(The man later confirmed as having HIV infection from his preserved blood samples).
So... it's actually much more than a "wives tale", as I originally joked.
===================================
From there it just spread like wildfire...
There's tons of statistics one can wade through for weeks, as to the different "paths"... but, it seems most widely accepted, that it started with the "Simian Imuno-Deficiency Virus"... found in monkeys/chimopanzees and made the "species jump" sometime in the 1930's in Central Africa.
The mutated virus became HIV.
====================================
With ALL the evdience I've encountered in the last 24 hours... that's the most scientifically supported theory so far... and the one I'm personally adhering to, until further research (if any) surfaces.
==================================
Along the lines of the men's "monkey-jumping" joke:
We should bear in mind, that HIV (and the related SIV) virus, are blood-borne transmitted... not just sexually transmitted.
I'm theorizing here...
That if someone was attacked by an infected animal, killed one, or was eating one... and as a consequence to any of these actions, blood was exchanged through an open wound (for instance)... it could transmit.
Remember... we're talking 1930's Congo area here...
So, all kidding aside, it doesn't necessarily infer, that a man had sex with a primate. LOL
Well...
ReplyDeleteI'm all "AIDS-Out" for a while. LOLOL
Looks like Ol' Conrad is going bye-bye for a while, huh?
yes I agree Lynyrd, that concludes my limited knowledge of the HIV virus...just what I remembered from nursing school - and I did a report for some class on Alan Cantwell - man is he a paranoid individual.
ReplyDeleteOn another note - since you said you liked conspiracies and may read this book - if you like conspiracies of the medical kind - he has all kinds of papers published
http://www.whale.to/c/cantwell_alan.html
Remember kids - just say no to sex with monkeys (unless the only other viable choice is Patricia Krenwinkle).
ReplyDeleteYeah... LOL
ReplyDeleteAnd say no to that Gaëtan Dugas dude too!
AHahahaha
Imagine going through life... and your only claim to fame is being known as "AIDS Patient Zero"?
Jeez...
I always thought that disease can jump from one species to another. Isn't that what happened with swine flu and avian flu?
ReplyDeleteHi Carol!
ReplyDeleteEssentially yes.
We're just joking now.
As was posted earlier:
"It's most commonly accepted now, that AIDS "jumped species", in such fashion as Ebola and Marburg came from monkeys.
Chimpanzees host a virus called SIV (Simian Immuno-deficiency Virus)... and HIV, is thought to be an off-shoot".
We're just joking now, about how it jumped... LOL
Male comedy, I guess...
"We're just joking now, about how it jumped... LOL
ReplyDeleteMale comedy, I guess..." - Lynyrd
Thanks! I'm more dense than usual today...
